Does your child struggle in school?
Growing up I had a tough time in school. I was intimidated by most subjects and thought all the other kids were smarter than me. I would experience anxiety during my math homework, before tests, and in class when I didn’t understand the subject matter.
Fast forward many years (but not too many!) to my sweet 3rd grade daughter. She entered a new school this year with excitement and a bit of anxiety about being the new girl. She quickly made friends but the classwork was overwhelming her from the very beginning.
My girl was not sleeping, not eating, and experiencing severe stomach aches. She came to me before bed almost every night stating how much she hated school. I prayed over her every time, and she’d crawl in bed with a look of desperation and deep sadness.
After meeting with her teacher and not seeing any change in her anxiety I reached out to the counselor at school. she began visiting her weekly while I made some big changes at home. We worked tirelessly on homework, flashcards, math facts, and reading. We prayed every night, every morning, and whenever she felt nervous.
Over time my girl’s anxiety has gotten better. But more importantly she recognizes the symptoms and comes to me for help. She controls her breathing and works through her frustration. We still pray together, often she comes asking me to cover her.
We will continue to work together, pray for understanding and peace, and allow God to teach her the lessons she needs to learn to become a stronger girl and eventually a godly woman. Below is a prayer that may help you as you navigate this difficult journey with your own child.
A Prayer for when Your Child Struggles in School
It’s so hard the watch my child struggle in school.
I want to make everything better, but I know I can’t.
Please give my child the confidence and patience to work through
these challenges. Ease the anxiety she feels when a difficult assignment
is given. I ask for wisdom in how to serve her best, and I
ask yo to give the teachers the same thing.
When she questions herself please be there to comfort her,
help her know she can accomplish any task with you by her side.
Giver her peace about school.
