As I looked down at the number on the scale tears filled my eyes. I quickly wiped them away and said a few choice words under my breath. My poor food choices were exposing themselves through numbers, and I felt defeated and angry. Why can’t I conquer this food struggle?
If I’m truly honest with myself I know this weight loss journey isn’t solely about food. It’s about what happens to my soul when I let food become my comfort over my relationship with God. Because He cares deeply for me He wants the best in every area of my life. Satan knows this and will do anything to pull me (and you) away from God. Through bingeing, overspending, pornography, adultery, gossip, etc., Satan lures us away from the most significant relationship in our lives.
Over the years I let food wage a war in my soul for a multitude of reasons.
When I felt out of control food seemed to steady me.
When I needed comfort food seemed to console me.
When I wanted satisfaction food seemed to fill me.
When I needed reassurance food seemed to restore me.
The big problem with all of the statements above is they are all a lie.
With this battle raging inside how do we fight against the sinful desire to give in and be filled by something other than Christ?
Food can never truly steady me, or console me, or restore me, or fill me. These are soul issues, not stomach issues. Only the Lord can satisfy those soul desires with something more. Psalm 23 mentions all the things God does for me.
- He leads me (v.2)
- He restores me (v.3)
- He guides me (v. 3)
- He is with me (v.4)
- He comforts me (v.4)
- He fills me (v.5)
- He satisfies me (v.5)
When I look to God for satisfaction instead of food I become more intentional with my eating choices and become more aware of the things my soul needs.
You may be thinking, Well that’s all well and good, but how do I intentionally choose Christ each time I want to eat?
Each intentional choice you make leads to another intentional choice. Below are some examples of how to stay on track.
Begin your day with the Lord. Read a devotional online, in a book, or choose a book of the Bible to study.
When you feel like eating out of emotion pray and walk away. God will not lead you to temptation, nor will He leave you there.
Choose healthy food over carb and calorie loaded options. This can make all the difference in your mood.
Plan you day as much as you can leaving room for a special occasion if you know ahead of time.
Our journey through weight loss and freedom from emotional/binge eating is about much more than food. When we pursue a healthy lifestyle and go to God with our cravings, we become women who develop a deeper relationship with Him while being open to receive all He has planned for us.
